Season Synopsis :
While the Harmons may appear at first glance to be the perfect American family, looks can be deceiving. Having suffered through a brutal miscarriage, and an episode of marital infidelity, mother Vivien (a former concert cellist who has long forgone her music), father Ben (a psychiatrist and the offending adulterer), and teenage daughter Violet (who has a penchant for self-mutilation) relocate from Boston to Los Angeles in an attempt to put the dark memories of their past behind them. While their new house (a stately 1920s mansion with an ominous history) initially seems to be too good to be true, the knowledge that it was the scene of a recent murder/suicide doesn’t dissuade the family from moving in… though maybe it should have. While their new house clearly holds dark and deadly secrets yet to be discovered, it doesn’t take long for the family to pick up with their new lives. While Ben begins treating a new patient (Tate: a teenage boy with violent, psychotic fantasies); and Violet struggles to fit in at school; Vivien occupies her time uncovering a bizarre mural she’s discovered underneath the wallpaper, all the while struggling to come to terms with her own troubled past. Meanwhile, Violet and Tate discover they share a common bond; Ben meets a former resident of the house who has his own tragic tale to tell; Vivien hires an elderly housekeeper with secrets of her own; and the family meets their kleptomaniac neighbor (Constance) and her daughter Adelaide (a Downs Syndrome sufferer), who seem too well acquainted with the mysterious house and its foreboding history.
